Explore cyanobacterial structure in three dimensions with this microscope-slide model, inspired by a whole-mount preparation of Nostoc filaments with heterocysts.
Nostoc forms colonies containing long chains of cells embedded within a gelatinous matrix. Among the ordinary photosynthetic cells are specialised cells called heterocysts, which provide the conditions needed for nitrogen fixation.
The model uses raised, contrasting forms to represent the colony, its winding filaments and specialised cells. This tactile format makes structures normally examined through a microscope easier to see, handle and discuss.
It is ideal for teaching microbiology, cyanobacterial morphology, nitrogen fixation, freshwater ecology, soil science and environmental biology. It can also support student revision, classroom demonstrations and STEM outreach.
Please note that this is a simplified artistic and educational representation. Genuine appearance varies according to the species, specimen preparation and viewing conditions. The model is not intended to replace microscopy or validated identification materials.
